My Analysis Of The Front Cover Of An Issue Of 'Kerrang!'

Kerrang! Magazine is aimed at those who listen to rock and heavy metal bands, which usually are aged around 14 – 21 years old. This is a niche magazine as its intention is to appeal to a distinct section of the market, in this case the rock genre. However, in order to attract more readers Kerrang also uses other bands from different categories of rock on the front cover such as Emo (My Chemical Romance), Classic Rock (Red hot chilli-peppers) and Gothic Rock (HIM).

Judging by positioning of the band ‘My Chemical Romance’ on the front cover I can guess that there is going to be further information and articles about the band. A key element on this front cover is the word ‘FREE!’ this is the magazines attempt to draw in the reader by cunningly offering free giant posters. Kerrang is aimed at the age group 14-21 and those that have an interest in heavy metal and rock music. The offer of free posters indicates that this magazine is aimed at the younger generation. Through their body language the band members on the front cover appear to show attitude and don’t seem to be friendly portrayed and they’re angry. However this ‘image’ can relate to the target audience stereotyped as typical teenagers. Each band member is wearing dark clothing, not only does this assists them to stand out against the white background, but it also makes their style clear.

The title is in a large and bold style with cuts of black lines through it, this could represent guitar strings. The title of the magazine indicates to the reader who the magazine is aimed at. The title represents the sound made by a loud guitar. The motto of the magazine is located on the top right hand corner of the page overlapping the title: ‘Life Is Loud’. The motto suggests the magazine is about ‘Loud’ music. The editor has also covered the cover with ‘Loud’ colours such as red and orange. The font used on this magazine cover is bold and all in capital letters, almost as if it is shouting at the reader

The text on this magazine is kept simple: ‘Death, drugs, revenge My Chemical Romance They’re not okay’. To begin with, three punchy words associated with the band. Although these words are printed in a small font it still catches the readers eye as the words are written in white. The buzz word on this front cover is ‘FREE’ this word is used to attract consumers and is also a clever way to make them think ‘they are getting their money’s worth.

My Analysis Of The Contents Page From An Issue Of 'Kerrang!'

The images used on the contents page allow the reader to see what type of music the magazine.

The colours used on this contents page, taken from ‘Kerrang!’ are black, white yellow some of the pictures stand out which echo the effect given by the colours on the front cover. The Information given on the contents page is very well organised. There are nine images which are the same size apart from one. I believe the editor chose the biggest picture because it’s a big story or something they know the readers will be interested in and convince them to read on and buy the magazine.

  1. Darren, this is taking shape, you just need to pick up the pace a little so you have enough time to work on the construction.
